1. Gone to Memphis/Sweet Southern People often ask me Honey why do you stay Well I hand 'em down some reason Cause it's easier that way You could bet your fondest dollar Some sweet southern day When the train-fare costs a nickel And the hotels cost a dime I'd be down on the road Gone to Memphis Through another week just barely Nothin left to say Just waitin' on some some something Well you think I'd learn someday Somethin' aint for nothin' And that's what I got to pay For if I got paid for singin' each sweet Southern day away I'd be down on the road Gone to Memphis This low lazy livin' Gonna make some dreamer pay We'll trade away tomorrow For one sweet southern day But time is cheap until you see Weeks just slip away Ill be down on the road Gone to Memphis

Surprises 03:11
4. Surprises Surprises mean nothing When no one believes I loved you When nobody cared That you gave to them freely What you thought could be shared And the sweet sounds were Lost to the wind Vibrations rebounding From unhearing minds I listened when nobody dared Just to make you feel easy When you told them you cared And they left you alone to yourself Your long losing lover Is waiting in tears With thanks for the Time that you spared When to leave seemed so easy And to stay seemed a lie And you touched me one Last time around Surprises me nothing When no one believes I loved you though nobody cares That you left here with nothing But your own peace of mind And the pleasure of trying again Listen let me listen To what you have said Your words are do gentle to wear That my head need not be right Just to hear and believe Are you once in a lifetime Then gone

12. Floods of South Dakota Roderick/Ashford (Clean Slate Music-BMI) Someday You'll build a cabin on the hillside Someday You'll find the gold you're lookin' for And maybe someday In the diamond mines of friendship You will find someone to share that winding road For all time You can count on me and all that's mine Sunsets always make me homesick Stirrin' up the wonder in me It must be my place as long as I remember I been starin' out old 183 So be kind I won't be here longer than a sunrise Sunshine and floods of South Dakota Come from the same skies I don't really think there's much That I could call mine Someday is a thing I cannot hold And it's gonna tell you something When you watch the river Roll up to your door Sweet life never lookin' back I don't think I'd ever own a patch of ground Lord from up high say on that railroad track It's just a second passing by and then it's gone. For old times Sendin' you this song to say that we're all fine Sunshine and floods of South Dakota Come from the same skies I don't really think there's much That I could call mine Someday is a thing I cannot hold And it's gonna tell you something When you watch the river Roll up to your door

about

Starting at the Attic in Boulder, CO, Roderick was on the scene beginning in 1960. The Attic was in the thick of the folk revival, there she performed solo, encountered Michael Bloomfield, a very short collaboration with David Crosby which turns up on European bootlegs, and migrated to SanFrancisco where she was singing the "basket-house"circuit with other young singers - Boz Skaggs and Janice Joplin among others.

Judy Roderick played the Philly Folk Festival in 1962, and was signed almost immediately to Columbia Records where she released "Aint Nothin But the Blues" produced by Bobby Scott with accompaniment by Scott, the Pierce Brothers, Milt Hinton, John Hammond Jr. The Columbia LP is now available for download only at iTunes (sorry bandcamp - not our choice! But so happy it's available)

Roderick played/sang blues like no other up and down the east coast, in folk venues from Boston to Coconut Grove, including some of the major blues shows at Cafe au Gogo. She made a second LP for Vanguard, a more folk sound with Artie Traum and Dick Weisman, "Woman Blue" (which has been reissued on CD) When she started writing her own songs, she made an electric record with her band "Sixty Million Buffalo" on ATCO (engineered by Bill Syzyk just before he began producing the Eagles), also now available on CD.

Enter Dexter Payne, who turned out to be her partner in love and in music for her last 16 years. Judy Roderick and Friends, travel and recording with Payne's Big Sky Mudflaps, and finally a reunion with Buffalo guitarist, Don DeBacker to form the Forbears, along with Payne and Washboard Chaz Leary, recently of Treme and Playing for Change.

In 1981 talks began with Bruce Ricker (Last of the Blue Devils/Rapsody Films) who introduced her Mac Rebennack, a.k.a. Dr. John. The fruit - a 1982 recording session of 4 songs with an all-star Boulder, CO lineup and Mac on piano & B-3. Demo for an album... or a movie?

Then Judy & the Forbears, the core band, on an east-coast tour including some dates with Mac Rebennack, found themselves in the studio again, this time in NYC with Malcomb Addey, British ex-patriot engineer from Abby Road, at the helm. At the end of two days they had a complete album.

Er, well… cassette. Seems no one was buying at the time, so they made a cassette to sell of the bandstand. That's how we did things in 1984, y'all!

Flash forward to 2008 and we find Payne assembling the pieces to release a CD with all the above... plus Judy singing a solo version of Floods, recorded in MT (1976). That's the song Tim & Mollie O'Brien covered in 1992 shortly after Judy's death. Now it's here for download. Spread the word! - Dexter Payne
